About Old Light

Old Light is a free space strategy game that runs in the browser. There is no studio and no publisher behind it, just one developer, Arjen Postma, who wanted a certain kind of game to exist again.

That kind of game is the classic browser strategy game: the genre of OGame and Travian, where an empire grows over real days and weeks in a galaxy shared with other players. Most of those games have faded away, and many that survived drifted into pay-to-win, where spending money counts for more than playing well. Old Light is an attempt to build that genre the way it used to be.

There is nothing to install and no account form to fill in beyond a name. Old Light is asynchronous by design: you check in a few times a day to queue what you want, then close the tab. The galaxy keeps moving while you are away, because the server runs the world whether you are watching or not. A session takes a few minutes, so the game fits into a normal working day.

Everyone plays in one shared, persistent galaxy, and every empire follows the same rules. Nothing for sale makes an empire stronger, and that will stay true as the game grows.

Old Light released in June 2026 and is playable right now. The guide explains every system in the game. New features land regularly, and player feedback shapes what gets built next. If you want to get in touch, whether to say hello or to tell me what the game needs, use the contact page.
