Terms of Service

Old Light is free to play, with an optional paid subscription described under Premium below. These terms are the rules for playing and describe how the service is provided.

Your account

An account is the display name you choose at signup. You are responsible for what happens under it, so keep control of the device and email address you use to log in.

You must be at least 13 years old to play. If the law where you live sets a higher age for using online services without parental permission, that higher age applies.

Fair play

The galaxy is shared, and one player breaking the rules makes the game worse for everyone else. By playing you agree to the following:

• Do not automate play. Software that plays the game for you, such as a bot or script, is not allowed.
• Do not exploit bugs. If you find one that gives an unfair advantage, report it through the contact page instead of using it.
• Do not send abusive messages. Harassment of other players is not tolerated.
• Do not try to access accounts that are not yours.
• Do not abuse invites. Creating accounts to invite yourself, or using bots or scripts to hand out invite links, is not allowed.

We may review messages sent in the game to enforce these rules. We may suspend or remove accounts that break these rules, and we may limit how many actions an account can take in the game. Where reasonable, we will warn you first. Data belonging to a removed account is handled as described in the privacy policy.

The game and your content

Old Light, including its name, code, artwork, and design, belongs to us. Playing gives you a personal licence to use the game for your own play. It does not transfer any ownership to you, and you may not copy, sell, or reuse parts of the game outside of playing it.

The display name you choose and the messages you send stay yours. By submitting them you give us permission to store and show them inside the game, where other players can see them, for as long as you keep the account. Your display name also appears on your public profile page and on the social-sharing card image generated for it. You are responsible for what you send, and we may remove content that is abusive, illegal, or breaks the fair play rules above.

The service

Old Light is provided as-is. We work to keep it online and stable, but we make no warranty about uptime or availability, and features of the game may change as it develops. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for loss of in-game progress or for the service being unavailable, except where the loss is caused by intent or gross negligence on our part.

Invites carry no cash value and earn no purchasable advantage. We may change or withdraw the invite feature at any time.

You can stop playing at any time, and you can have your account and its data deleted whenever you want, as described in the privacy policy.

Premium

Old Light stays free to play. Premium is an optional subscription that pays for the game's running costs and adds convenience. It does not sell power, so nothing in it gives you an advantage another player cannot reach without paying.

Payment is handled by Stripe. Stripe sells Premium to you through Link as merchant of record, so the charge on your statement reads LINK.COM with our name after it, and your receipts and invoices come from Link. Link's terms cover the payment itself. These terms cover the game and your access to it.

Premium is billed monthly or yearly and renews automatically until you cancel. You can cancel from Manage subscription in the game, or from your order in Link. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and your access keeps running until the period you already paid for ends.

Access starts as soon as you buy. By subscribing you ask for access straight away, and you accept that once it has started you no longer have the 14-day right of withdrawal that EU consumer law would otherwise give you. We do not refund a period that has already started, including when you stop playing partway through it.

Link handles the payment, so a refund can also be decided there, and Link's own terms apply to that decision. Where the law where you live gives you a right these terms cannot exclude, that right still applies. Outside of that we may still refund at our discretion, so ask through the contact page if you think your case warrants it.

We may change what Premium includes as the game develops. Your price is set when you subscribe and stays there: a later price change applies to new subscriptions, and yours keeps the price you signed up at for as long as it renews without interruption. If you cancel and subscribe again later, or switch between the monthly and yearly plan, the price current at that time applies. Two things sit outside that: a change in the tax rate that applies to you is passed on as it changes, and if you pay in a currency other than euro, the amount is converted at checkout each period, so it moves with the exchange rate.

Which law applies

These terms are governed by the law of the Netherlands. If you play as a consumer, you keep the mandatory protections of the law of the country you live in, which these terms cannot take away. A dispute we cannot settle through the contact page can be brought before the competent court in the Netherlands, unless the mandatory rules that protect you as a consumer give you the right to bring it before a court where you live.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change. When they do, we will post the updated version here with notice on the site. A material change is posted at least 14 days before it takes effect.
